Most of the girls at were in for a real treat when the administration of Daulat Ram College was marching in full swing against the inefficiency of the governing body of the renowned institution. The classrooms remained dull and dormant; the grounds that once echoed girly giggles and chirps didn’t see much activity for almost a week. Most of us got a good reason to enjoy the winter mornings with coffee and brownies in bed but for the helpless admins, the 1.9 degrees was a nuisance. Although the temperature was at its lowest, the spirit of the campaigners kept them warm and nothing could deter them. All kinds of posters could be seen, rangingfrom atacit “we want justice” to a dramatic kursi chhodo (be efficient or else leave the chair) which reflected the emotions of the campaigners.

The issue starts back from 2009-10, the year that marked the appointment of ten, grade-D employees on a permanent basis by the signatories of the governing body of the college. This was however inconsistent with the University Grant Commission’s directive stating that no grade D employee be hired on a permanent basis but on contractual basis. It was only 3-4 months back that the aggrieved employees stopped receiving their due salaries following a cut from the UGC fund. The agenda of the distressed protestors reads as follows:

- The 10 employees (the forerunners of the protest)should be duly paid their salary, medical benefits and all such government allowances on a fair and regular basis from the UGC fund itself.

- All the employees in various departments must receive due recognition and promotions.

- All the vacancies in various units be appropriately and swiftly filled.

- The governing body of the college must involve a member of the non- teaching staff of the college in all its decisions.

The strike has been going on for 12 odd days yet the wronged parties are impatiently awaiting a concluding dialogue from those accountable.

“We are to hold an indefinite strike till our demands are met in arighteous manner” were the words of one of the many voices demanding speedy justice.

For now classes have returned to partial normalcy, however with the student dealing windows and librarybeing shut, the students are facing problems. The students can only hope the issue gets resolved soon and college gets back to its normal functioning.

Mahatma Gandhi quoted "Be the change you wish to see in the world” - these words have surely influenced the students of the Social Service society of Sri Venkateshwara College "PARIVARTAN" who organized a cleanliness drive on the 11th of January, 2013 in the vicinity of their college: The Satya Niketan area.

Parivartan -As the name suggests pledges to contribute towards changing the callous attitude of the people towards the society and making the world a better place to live in. Apart from this cleanliness drive, Parivartan has also undertaken several other activities in order to sow the seeds of happiness among the people. Some of these activities are: Teaching the underprivileged kids to spread the message "Education is what comes to the rescue when everything falls apart” , Sensitization to spread the message "Remember the happiest people are not getting more, but those giving more" and also organized several health camps and blood donation camps. In September 2012, people donated blood with great zeal and made it possible to collect 118 units of blood in six hours with the help and contribution of Parivartan.

Mr. Anil Sharma, Municipal Councilor was the chief guest of the event not only ensured cleaner surroundings even safer place in and around the campus area. There was a street play performed by the Volunteers for Better India. It is group of self motivated people which performs street play around Delhi to change India for a better future. The main issues on which the group works upon are:

·         Education
·         Environment upgradation
·         Anti-corruption/good governance
·         Safety for women and girl child
·         De-Addiction
·         Senior citizens

The main motive of the cleanliness drive was to sensitize people about issues that really matter to us and to try to inculcate a few essential habits like throwing the garbage in dustbins, rather than piling it up around our surroundings. With this motive, students took their brooms and cleaned the streets enthusiastically. They walked around the area carrying posters with catchy slogans like "Don’t be punk. Throw your junk”, “It doesn’t require money to be neat, clean and dignified ", etc. The cleanliness drive was a little effort on the part of the members of Parivartan to bring a change and realize that no one, other than "US" will come to clean up our environment.

It is our responsibility to make India cleaner and greener. The President of the Social Service Society Ms. Aavika Dhanda says "We have been studying here since a long time. The place where we study must be clean. Its ours. We made it dirty and now we must clean it." Mr. Subhinav Arora who played the most important role in organising Clean Satya further adds , “I hope this small drive brings a little change, if not much ! " and it surely did manage to catch the attention of some of the people who would usually dump their garbage on the roads. Seeing the success of this Cleanliness Drive we hope it sets an example for further such initiations, not just by the college students but by the society as a whole.

One in three women on the planet will be raped or beaten in her lifetime; ending violence against women is as important as ending poverty, or Aids or global warming. That's why I want you to join our campaign... Eve Ensler
If we go by the words of renowned playwright Eve Ensler, the protection of our women is in need of some severe reforms. Theatrocities faced by women is not a subject that we are unacquainted with. The pain and anguish felt by the country’s brave heart Nirbhaya has only accentuated the plight of women in India. The recent ‘one billion rising’ campaign which was hosted by Miranda house, university of Delhi, was a call to women across the nation to stand up against the world's complete indifference towards the other half of the population of the world. The event which lasted all of 2 hours talked about the unbelievable and inexcusable comments from self-proclaimed god men and the so called moral guardians of this country. This event saw playwright EveEnsler, activist Kamla Bhasin and dancer Mallika Sarabhai interacting with the enthusiastic crowd which largely consisted of young women.

This campaign is gradually going viral throughout the globe. On February 14, 2013, a one-day event will be held which will be a call for one billion women around the world to walk away from their homes, businesses, and jobs, and join together to dance in a show of collective strength. Such an innovative campaign stands as a prerequisite for appalling times as these.  A short film of the name ‘trigger warning’ made under the direction of feminist Eve Ensler  can be viewed on YouTube which has again done an equally remarkable job by reminding women that all hope is not lost and women alone must rise, strike and take action against all odds.

Enactus SRCC recently collaborated with the production company 'Dramabaaz Co.' for a muppet adaptation of Charles Dicken's 'A Christmas Carol'. The puppeteers currently under the aegis of 'Project Kayakalp' were featured in the main cast of this production.

Project Kayakalp is one of the community outreach projects run by Enactus SRCC which seeks to empower the puppeteers in the Kathputli Colony of Shadipur Depot with a stable and sufficient source of income by identifying and capitalizing on existing markets through diversified contracts, and modernizing their art forms in order to tap newer markets.

The show was performed in 3 different venues from the 24th till the 28th of December with a total of 6 shows being performed. The venues were LTG Auditorium, Mandi House (1 show on the 24th); Epicentre, Gurgaon (2 shows on the 25th); Alliance Francaise, Lodhi Estate (1 show on the 26th and 2 shows on the 27th).

Marketing of the shows was done extensively by Dramabaaz Co. and Enactus SRCC.

The 'Christmas Carol' was a Hinglish play of about 80 minutes.  It was a new version of the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly old man, who is paid a visit on Christmas Eve by the ghost of his former dead partner, Jacob Marley, warning him to mend his selfish ways. Celebrating the spirit of Christmas, the musical extravaganza was full of song and dance. It was a perfect mixture of humor with a touch of spook. The catchy songs, superb lights and brilliant story were a treat for both the children and the adults. By the end of the show, everyone was humming the catchy song, ‘scrooge, scrooge, scrooge’.

Approximately 810 tickets were sold over the span of four days. Tickets were sold both, online and on the spot. Member of Enactus SRCC were present on all four days and handled most of the marketing, ticketing and ushering.

The collaboration of the string puppeteers with Dramabaaz Co. has allowed them to broaden their creative and professional horizons, helped them learn a whole new form of puppetry and also given them the experience of performing in a large scale theatre production.

We are now standing on the threshold of a new tomorrow, a time when even the most nagging of the dictatorships are giving way to the triumphant democracy. Standing on such a crucial juncture, if parliamentary debates and discussions are considered an end in itself then it’s just the beginning of a new end. The parliamentary procedures, the long hours of debates the tediousness of the discussions are just the means to an end. If now the question is what are these ends then the answer must be that it envisages that the principle of democracy remains in its pristine form a form in which decision is reached
through consensus , the leaders of the people are accountable to them; that they develop a sense of sensitivity towards the masses. In turn, it also gives immense scope to the masses to make sure that decisions of their future are in accordance to their dream, that the discussions in the Parliament should circumscribe their needs and most importantly the outcome of the entire procedure resonates with the ambitions of the masses and gives them immense strength, indomitable will and courage to believe in parliamentary democracy where an individual happily entrusts his leader the responsibility of realizing his dreams, his ambitions and even his potentials .

But all these principles and philosophies of parliamentary democracy are dependent on the working of complex and sometimes even contradictory processes and assumptions. This includes agreement through disagreement, the willingness to open one’s heart and mind followed by an attempt to respect each other view points, to understand why someone is thinking the way he is thinking and most quintessentially the capacity to compromise. Now if the question is how to inculcate these values in the masses in general and leaders in particular, how to make toiling masses aware of their value and power in a Parliamentary democracy, how to make leaders understand that with great power given to them by Parliamentary democracy comes the greatest of all responsibilities. These are the questions we seek to answer through Mock Indian Parliament. These are the principles and the philosophies which we subscribe to .

The Symposium Society of Hindu College provide the potential leaders of the future in general and students in particular the parliamentary ambience where they can feel the essence of parliamentary procedures, where all these principles will be in force and their capacity to compromise, to lead and most necessarily to belief will be put to a rigorous test. All this becomes more important and difficult specially because we are a part of world’s largest, most active and lively democracy .

With these immensely ambitious thoughts, the Symposium Society of Hindu College, University of Delhi announces with panache – THE 2nd HINDU MOCK INDIAN PARLIAMENT.
