8th March marked the 102nd anniversary of International Women’s day. It is an undeniable fact, that, from the day it started back in the 1900s a lot has been done to upgrade the status of women in the society and has been a women's long struggle to achieve equality. It focuses on the celebration of respect, appreciation and love for the economic, social and political achievements of women. The political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner. The days celebrated the struggle of women like Rosa parks, Lalithambika Antharjanam, Saroj Nalini Dutt, Kamini Roy and several others to promote equal rights and suffrage for women.

With Women’s day, it is set forth, that, feminism in India is a set of movements aimed at defining, establishing, and defending equal political, economic, and social rights and equal opportunities for Indian women. It is the pursuit of women's rights within the society of India. Like their feminist counterparts all over the world, feminists in India seek gender equality: the right to work for equal wages, the right to equal access to health and education, and equal political rights.

Now the question comes: Why an all girls’ college? What good would that do?
The answer is that an all girl’s’ college helps us focussing in a girl’s education in a country where girls are less likely to reach optimal levels of education. To give them a sense of economic independence and taught to demand information and find the knowledge to take charge of their own lives. A higher literacy rate among women would result in increased provision of skilled job work and more job security, and lesser the narrow on looking of women as only of as their familial and domestic help, and no! Here we are not talking about the fashion forward, cell phone gimmicking women, but women who come from all parts of India with a spark of growth and a hope of growing something better out of their lives.

In an all girls’ college, a girl build friendships and self-esteem because they aren't as focused on being pretty. Even girls who are sworn enemies can show compassion to one another. Typically all girls’ college have a lot of enrichment activities and awareness days that feature various atrocities against women. They learn how little the world thinks of them and how to avoid becoming a victim to social constructs. Girl's schools cut down on fighting. A girl who fights or gets loud all the time, gets left out. So, the girl has to be careful. Usually, it's easier to improve one's own strengths than it is to get into an 'I'm better than you' war with someone else. The girls are surer of themselves because they have to learn what's at stake when they make fools of themselves. Girl's schools are not about being elitist. They are about training young women not to be victims, how to prioritize, and how to survive in a world that will hurt them one way or another.

Over the years, colleges I Delhi University, like Lady Shri Ram, Indraprastha College for Women, Miranda House have been running on the line of them rules of women empowerment, and produced numerous alumni that have made phenomenal changes in their respective fields.

All these colleges have many things in common, they had a very modest beginnings, with scarce campuses, little faculty and handful of courses. But today they have grown and made their names in academic as well as extracurricular fields and political activism. These colleges are designed to give women an effective voice in the world which will reflect the genuine development needs of this section of the society

With a vision in mind and a determination to push the women’s stature in the society to a higher rung, even though there are miles to go before we sleep. With the growing progress, an optimistic voice ringing in our ears would certainly bring us closer to the cause of The International Women’s Day.

MOSAIC’13 ended with a bang on Saturday. It just couldn’t have been any better. With three days loaded with fun and surprises, Ramjas College managed to make its biennial fest a huge success. The vivacity and zest with which the events were handled was commendable.Shahid Mallya, the songster behind a few of the catchiest songs of 2012, along with Urvashi, serenaded the throng of listeners with his honeyed voice, leaving them captivated and mesmerized. Bishal, a second year student of History, RamjasCollege, thought that this year’s fest was more coordinated and methodized as compared to last year’s. “Even with a low budget this year we seemed to have done fantastically well. The fashion show was the highlight of the fest and I am glad we could keep the rush and panic down this time”, he said. Afreshman of the same course, Pragati seemed to agree as well.

If nothing else, this was a terrific start to the much needed and awaited week- long mid semester break.

One could have never thought dawdling around for more than a quarter of a day could ever be so invigorating. Abuzz with life and a lot of activity, the second day of Mosaic’13 unplugged proved to be just as much fun, if not more than the first.

It all started with an IPL bidding competition. After separating cricket maniacs from the rest by way of a short preliminary quiz, the bidding started.  All five teams selected were pumped up throughout the competition which did not  let you fidget in your seat even once . The best team was won by Pankaj from Ramjas college and Siddharth from Sri Ram College of Commerce.Syed Wasbir and Shivangi from Ramjas college bagged the second place.

This was followed by a solo dance competition and those people absolutely conquered the stage. The level of talent was beyond belief and it left the crowd swaying. But this was just the beginning. There was a group dance contest as well which was equally mesmerizing and picturesque. At length, we were told to gear up for the fashion show, something that everyone had been waiting for. Following a sensuous show of the dernier cri, we got ourselves the boldest and the most beautiful.  The teamfrom IHT took home the first prize and Amity the second. The best male model was from the College of Vocational studies, the best female model being from Kamla Nehru College. The results for the dance competitions as well as the face painting competition have not been declared as yet and are being eagerly awaited.

The National Sports Organization (NSO) of Lady Shri ram College for Women (LSR) in collaboration with Delhi Police organized a self-defense workshop in the college premises recently. The workshop took place from 1st to the 8th of March, 2013 from 7:30-8:30 am, every morning.

The workshop was open to all the students of LSR and was priced at a very nominal fee of Rs.50 per student. The event saw students eagerly signing up several days before and later counts indicated almost 150 participants.

NSO, LSR organizes these self-defense workshops once every 3-4 years; the last happened in 2008. However, this year saw more enthusiastic participation by students than ever before.  The December 16 gang rape case that has led women to realize the importance of knowing basic self defence in order to be safe at all times. Their protection is now their own responsibility, not to be trusted with anybody else. In case of any menacing situation that the girls find themselves in, they should be able to fend off the attacker for as long as they can.

The participants were taught the best self-defense techniques for a number of different situations. The moves included different types of kicks and punches. The participants were taught how they should react when the attacker grabs their hair or neck, their shoulders, or even their torso. Different situations warrant different reactions and counter-attacks.

It is hoped that the Delhi Police will collaborate with the NSO Unions of several other colleges and alleviate the fear that several of us from and outside Delhi face every minute when we are out of our homes.

The annual English Departmental Fest, Pantheon ’13, of DCAC more than lived up to its hype and set a benchmark for the ones to follow. Held on 4th and 5th March 2013, the fest had literally lit up the college with its lively activities and competitions. Inaugurated on the morning of 4th day of March, the first events to kick-start the event was the Debate and the Panel Discussion, which ultimately went on to become the high point of the fest.  The fact that the event was held in association with Bioscope, the film society of Delhi College of Arts and Commerce is enough to suggest that films, cinema, movies and literature were a pivotal topic of discussion throughout the two days.

Picture
Without a doubt, the panel discussion on Cinema and Literature was the most-attention-grabbing-event. Ansh Ranvir Vohra, a student of English Hons, says, “We had an actor, a filmmaker and an author/film critic (as the panelists). So we had all perspectives covered. Hence all queries/doubts the audience had about the concept of literary adaptations were very convincingly answered.” The talk on Music and Counterculture too witnessed a packed auditorium. Next to the auditorium was a Disneyland-themed studio, complete with a Prince-Charming and Cinderella.

Picture
The Yard-Sale stall, reselling old and used novels, was a hit among the students too.  The next day, was action-packed as events like the Quiz, Treasure Hunt and the Spell-Bee took place. Students in teams could be seen running around in a dug-up-messy campus, looking for clues. The Quiz heated up as the team from Venky alleged cheating, but eventually went on to win! Rohan Joshi, the quizmaster surely kept the audience entertained. The Pizza Hut stall was too thronged by students flitting from one event to another.

All in all, the preparations were nicely done and standards ensured. The promotions spree which led to the event had struck the right chord with the students and the fest most certainly lived up to the expectations!

The dynamism of the first day of Mosaic ’13 left everyone who attended the fest spellbound and craving for more. There were events happening by the second and people could be seen scurrying around from one event or one food stall to another.
The front lawn was colorfully transformed into a spot for a carnival with a wide variety of games like musical chairs, tug of war, Tambola and paper dance, while the back lawn was very efficiently put to use as a food fest. The general quizcompetition saw heavy and enthusiastic participation. Lengthy but gripping, it was delightful to watch the teams so zealously compete against each other. The team that won was a cross team of Ramjas college and Kirori Mal college while SRM university was a close second. The Ad Mad competition was won by the team from Janki Devi Memorial College that came up with the idea of JITENDRA DANCING SHOES which was extremely innovative and won many accolades. The results of the fine arts competitions like Poster and Rangoli making are yet to be announced. Even after two events (Debate and Street Dance competition) getting cancelled, the day held its charm throughout and was fun to be a part of.

The enthusiasm of day 1 has overflowed into day 2 and people are looking forward to the events and Jazz day 2 promises to offer.
