The National Sports Organization (NSO) of Lady Shri ram College for Women (LSR) in collaboration with Delhi Police organized a self-defense workshop in the college premises recently. The workshop took place from 1st to the 8th of March, 2013 from 7:30-8:30 am, every morning.

The workshop was open to all the students of LSR and was priced at a very nominal fee of Rs.50 per student. The event saw students eagerly signing up several days before and later counts indicated almost 150 participants.

NSO, LSR organizes these self-defense workshops once every 3-4 years; the last happened in 2008. However, this year saw more enthusiastic participation by students than ever before.  The December 16 gang rape case that has led women to realize the importance of knowing basic self defence in order to be safe at all times. Their protection is now their own responsibility, not to be trusted with anybody else. In case of any menacing situation that the girls find themselves in, they should be able to fend off the attacker for as long as they can.

The participants were taught the best self-defense techniques for a number of different situations. The moves included different types of kicks and punches. The participants were taught how they should react when the attacker grabs their hair or neck, their shoulders, or even their torso. Different situations warrant different reactions and counter-attacks.

It is hoped that the Delhi Police will collaborate with the NSO Unions of several other colleges and alleviate the fear that several of us from and outside Delhi face every minute when we are out of our homes.
