There can be no liberty unless there is economic liberty…

- Margaret Thatcher

After the spate of wrenching scams, unruly policy paralysis, untenable inflation, Dr. Manmohan Singh has struck a raw nerve by unveiling the Animal spirit as the Centre has sanctioned the move to direct FDI in retail and aviation. Undoubtedly this can be ticked off as a much needed breakthrough for the economy leading to growth and investor sentiment .Centre has allowed 51% investment in multi brand retail sector while above 51% in single brand retailing. Moreover, the foreign airlines can hold 49% of the stakes in the domestic ones with liberalized sourcing norms. While mulling over the retail sector, diversified India may attract upto $16 billion FDI in the next two to three years in which $10 billion is expected to be a back end investment. The prospective surge in the investment could be a harbinger for our debt laden economy. The policy is expected to foster employment by creating a single job per 250 sq feet in retail.
Multi-brand retailers like Wal-mart, Carrefour, Tesco etc can all be viewed as a boon to the farmers as these will initiate the investment in farm required to store supply chains leading to the "positive negation" of the middlemen in the entire process. In fact, this has plagued the nation so far from achieving higher skies. However, a single morass that could infuse a sting in the sorts of many is that multi brand retailers will only be able to set their stores in less than 20 cities because of the indifferent support in the backdrop of the murk political play by BJP.

The beleaguered magnate of our country can finally take a sigh of relief as even after all the loopholes; they still maintain their position as the benefitted lot. They can finally look forward to tap the strategic as well as financial investment to revive the companies out of the blues. Hitherto termed as the raising of adequate capital in the mercurial and fragmented market was not a pushover but now that the push has finally come to shove, the entrepreneurs can stride to raise the much needed capital. The foreign investors who have had their eyes glued to the novelty of Indian market will be requires to invest in the back- end infrastructure that would lead to the reduction in waste of farm produce, improve livelihood of the farmers, lower prices of the produce & mollify the supply-side inflation. This has also helped the single -brand retailers like IKEA and H&M get an inch closer to the Indian market. While talking about the aviation sector the move can be hailed as a last ditch attempt to fake the crash as the foreign investment in domestic airlines can pop the airlines out of the collective debt of Rs. 90,000 crore and an accumulated loss of Rs.42,700 crore. In order to actually lay down the red carpet for the foreign carriers, the centre has to address the baggage of several cost reduction contrary to the 350% hike in jet fuel and the rationalization of the slew of airport charges. It is expected that both sectors put together can generate
employment for about $1 million. The raft of bogeys that could actually lead to the roll back of the glistening red carpet is a bit political as well as economical. On the economic front, the financial crisis, poor governance & policy flip-flops could play a major havoc along with the broad contours of the proposal. The analysts as well as the foreign investors are gazing at it quite cautiously as that is of utmost importance before any steps are undertaken. There are definitely no doubts about the richness of the consumer base India is proud to have in its pocket.

On the political front, the recalcitrant opposition& the forsaking allies has dealt with a final blow to the UPA's positive sentiments. The in-door mudslinging, strikes & the royal disorders have much to do with the advent of FDI as BJP is upping the ante against the move, not just for the sake of local kirana shops but also for the sake of backtracking political gains. Both the allies as well as the virulent opposition have been successful in cascading the support and appreciation for FDI to some extent by their much hyped indefinite strikes.

To conclude, if something good has to be jotted down in the papers, the centre should relentlessly slide the FDI forward to finally make a deep impact amid the animosity.

Many would agree that journalism is not just a job- it’s a career! It’s one such field which breaks the norms of being a 9 to 5 job. One can look at journalism in many ways however the ideal is to inform the intended audience about topics ranging from political
affairs to corporate advancements, cultural aspects of the society and so on. Journalism expands to editing, photojournalism, and documentary. This field as a career may seem extremely alluring but like any other option, it does come with its own set of pressures. Journalists swear by the notion,“Being at the right place at the right time” along with managing deadlines and indefinite working hours. Add to that the limited number of quality institutes available to train the journalists of tomorrow. Delhi University offers B. A.(Hons.) Journalism in five colleges: Delhi College of Arts & Commerce (31 seats), Kamla Nehru College (39 seats), Lady Shri Ram College (23 seats), Maharaja Agrasen College (46 seats) & Kalindi College (46 seats). DCAC, the pioneer in this field, initiated the course in 1989. Since then, the course has created a brand name and is considered to be one of the best across the country. The three-year duration course offers extremely interesting subjects ranging from Political Sciences to History, Economics to Law, and Ethics of Journalism to Mass Communication. The syllabus is at par with the universities that offer the same course at Post-Graduate Level. Infrastructure is the only arena where the university can be given any negative marks. The lack of first-class labs and equipments persist to be an issue. Only MAC & LSR can boast of a fine Journalism Lab. Nonetheless, students are compensated with workshops, lectures from media professionals, opportunity to attend press conferences etc. The faculty across all colleges also consists of established names from the industry.

Common Journalism Entrance Test (CJET) began in the year 2011 and has successfully helped passionate students to pursue their dreams despite their performance at the school level. The fact that an overwhelming majority of the present first-years have a science or a commerce base proves that the course is a hit amongst all. The process of admissions & counseling is transparent and merit does not go unrewarded. The Entrance exam is usually held in the last week of May or first week of June. Candidates who qualify are interviewed followed by counseling. For more information log on to the official admission site: http://journalismdu.admissionhelp.com/DUfassh/login.aspx.

The future prospects of this course are massive as it not only provides one with a green card to the newspaper & electronic media field but also provides one with a choice of getting into P.R., Advertising, Film-making, Editing and Photography. Most colleges have P-cells which get in touch with top-notch media companies in order to provide the students with the best opportunities. DU provides a certain class of trained students that are known to leave a mark. Hence, placements are almost guaranteed as companies yearn for DU students. Preeti Dahiya, alumni of KNC batch ‘05, feels that placements should not be a cause of worry provided that the students are sincere and fairly talented. Presently, she’s a freelance journalist as well as a guest lecturer at DCAC and Kalindi College. Dahiya has worked with DD, New X, and Headlines Today in the past. The university has churned out a huge number of talented and fairly successful media professionals in the last decade. Rahul Kanwal, Monika Kshatriya, Anibran Roy, Shalini Langer , Rishabh Gulati, Shruti Goel, Priyanka Chandra, Garima Malhotra, Nidhi Razdan,Shweta Rajpal Kohli to name a few.

The Journalism Department of almost every college is popular for their fest, newspaper issues and annual journals. Even though the course intellectually challenges an individual, it stands out as one of the best across the university. There is a certain kind of dedication, respect and awe associated with the course which makes it worthwhile. So, the next time you see a young journalist facilitating a debate or you come across an article which compels you to think & question, do a background check and chances are he/she may just be a product of Delhi University.

It's nothing less than a night dream for each and every denizen to glare the estranged states savoring the birthday of a martyr. For a martyr its  like a prevision eventually steering  into a vision .On auspicious day of September the 28th, Gallant Shaheed Bhagat Singh's birthday was celebrated with much pomp and pleasure at Shaheed Bhagat Singh College while the similar wave was witnessed in the counterpart Pakistan when the age-old Shaadman Chowk  got itself rechristened as Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chowk . The seeds which were sown by the valiant martyr, have finally reaped the growth and the hubris.
It was a two day event at SBSC which surely took a whooping bite of everyone's grey matter . September the 27th was well -marked by the adornment of premises by bewitching beauty of  a huge Rangoli which had the name of the martyr engineering through the sun- baked hues.
The cracking & the bursting of lungs by the  bonafide bunch of NCC cadets in front of the college lawn was  itself symbolic of untenable strength of  character that  Bhagat Singh have had possessed .The staff in the stint scooped some minutes out of their busy schedule too  commemorate the pride & honor of the Institution by garlanding the idol of  Bhagat Singh in presence of inquisitive and popping freshers, further followed by the go-green, the plantation event by the Principal & the Student Union of college that basked in the event to showcase their unconditional love .
On 28th the newly elected panel got the College grooving  by organizing the Fresher's party in the premises itself .The dais got full justice by DJ Sumit Sethi who toe-to-toe got the throng excited by his bunch of jokes and banters.
The event embodied various contests for the boys and girls . For women clad in exquisite dresses, it was Style Diva contest in association with Veet which had the ladies showcasing ramp walks, dance, music and must grasp aura of  their beauty. They indeed got the young hearts rolling.
For the very dashing men it was Nano pick & drop contest, the event got its hard shape when boys took to the stage their obvious machismo & desi latkaas and jhatkaas on famous bollywood item numbers.
Apart from all else cheering in party mood, it was harsh yapping and rapping by the freshers on Honey Singh's numbers that received tons of rhythmic hoots and woots.
It was a well shaped event with usual bliss and richness.                                                                                                                                                                                                          For the nation as a whole it was a cherishing day that had an aroma of togetherness unfolding in forsaking and bisected nation. The feat that Bhagat Singh rared to achieve finally rolled up in the form of molding mindsets of  some veritable Indian- Pakistani's who had performed their bit to cut through the societal and the political barrage that was historically shaped by Muslim League to belatedly let the Chowk move with it's real name.
The contours of the nation that Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru dared to canvas have meticulously met an end to form the eternal bond of mirth & ever-lasting happiness!

Every new Semester commence with a bang. New days, new class rooms, new professors, new subjects and almost everything new. One usually takes the first few weeks for granted. Sleeping in, partying, never even bothering to buy the textbooks. Result- assignments and lessons starts piling up and in the end one has to work harder, more than required to get the required work done.
Well, but that is not the life at all, one has to bid adieu to the luxurious living style at some point or other. Difficult, though, but then there’s no other alternative. Believe is not an option, one just has to know College with all the fun also implies better concentration towards work and studies, its about our career after all. Laid back attitude is of no use during the examination, one should never let the procrastination be the reason for their failure.

Most ready tips to help with the difficult assignments one has to do throughout their college career is through “Time Management.”

Write it Down

Go Planner. Use a notebook, write on papers or stick notes, whatever suitable.
Jot down the assignments and tests and other important works and their due dates on most visible places for it is nearly impossible to remember everything. Once everything is scribbled its easy scheduling time efficiently.

Plan Ahead. Stay Ahead

Knowing when assignments are due makes it easier to plan the schedule. Complete assignments that are due first or require more time instead of easier ones. This lessen down the burden, leaving behind the assignments which can be done easily and quickly with interest.
Don’t wait until the last moment. One might think, after the difficult work has been all set and done, rest may wait and it leads them unfinished until the semester end. So, it’s better to Split the assignments into smaller fragments and set due dates throughout the semester. One will definitely be thankful later for saving themselves from a headache and stress!

Priority

College work should be prioritize before the social life. That doesn’t mean one have to practically make library their home to do well, but must learn to manage and balance between personal and professional front. The world won’t end if not partying for a day. Will it?
We ought to sought our priorities! What has to be done first, should be done by hook or by crook.

Limiting the Distractions

Laptops/Desktops, Cellulars, Television = biggest source of distraction. Best solution is to maintain good distance while working or studying of course not when they are the only gadgets you need to work with [Obvious Pun]. Distracting oneself is lot easier than controlling the urges and working hard. Why not accept it as a challenge?
P.S- Do it once, it might work wonders.

Relax

Scheduling time to relax is just as important as getting the work done. A power nap or two, going for a run or watching few episodes of your favorite soap opera or rather chilling with your friends or a good written work, can help recharge your mind.
Overworking without a break leads to hazy working of brain, which of course ain’t an ideal situation. Its necessary to relax in between work.

ALL WORK AND NO PLAY LEADS TO DULLNESS AND FRUSTRATION!

Happy Success!

Kapil Sibal is revolutionizing the undergraduate degree of our somewhat beloved University Of Delhi.
Starting from the academic session 2013-2014, all undergraduate courses will comprise of an additional year making an honours degree four years long.

My Thinking- this move is excellent but heading the way for semester system. To put it rather more arrantly - Good intentions, poor execution.
However, before critiquing this idea, let me list down the key elements of this degree.

1) As mentioned earlier, it will be a four year degree course.
2) There are three exit options for this degree.
3) It will follow a credit system.
4) It will, supposedly be more "Hand On" and "Project Oriented".

So, the above is just a brief summary of the facts at hand. I shall dive into more details now about the above points except the first one, for obviously it cannot be explained any further.

There would be three exit options for this degree:
- If a student chooses to leave after completion of the second year, he/she would be awarded a diploma.
- If a student chooses to leave after the completion of the third year, he/she would be awarded a general degree.
- If a student completes the entire four years, he/she would be awarded an honours degree.

Moving on to the credit system - Students would get credits for each class they attend and would also get credits for sports/extracurricular activities. If they meet the minimum credit requirement, they will graduate. Hence, a very lucid concept which doesn't require further elucidation (Bear in mind that the nitty-gritties of this system are still being worked out).

The last point is that the course promises to offer more flexibility of subjects and more field work during the course of their study. The theory part would be given lesser weightage and more would be given to field work, internships, research projects etc.

Personally, as said before, I think that this is a well needed and good change in our current education paradigm but it is being poorly executed. There is no discourse occurring between the teachers and the authorities. The future DU students, have no information how it is going to pan out. Thanks to the lack of orientation or introduction to the same. The last batch of the annual system passes out next year and colleges will have to grapple with two systems simultaneously again. What is the need to rush into this system?
What is the reason for the lack of dialogue between the concerned parties?

Questions remain unanswered and ‘Students’, along with the ‘Teachers’ awaits them with eager mind, to which University remains mum!

A matter this popular, is not just a matter today,
For some its a debate, and for some merely child’s play,
For some it is the road to Damascus,
And for some it might be another usual ruckus.

This freedom of expression is “ELEPHANTINE”,
Makes even the most idle man break his confines.
So why should you and I stay behind,
When youth related issues are left for us to unwind.

Reservation for girls in ‘the’ University Of Delhi,
Is a big question mark on the gender inequality.
For India’s education system, to raise the bar,
An unbiased view is the need of the hour.

If seats are reserved for girls, like they are today,
It might enlighten the future of women, which otherwise is grey.

Some are deceased through female feticide,
While others are victimized in the vice of burning the bride
Some are persecuted to sexual slavery,
And all such iniquities make women all the more fiery.

Cogent Sex ratio is NOT an Indian scenario,
And domestic violence and suppression aren’t just negligible trivia.
Right to Education is the only groundbreaking reform
Through which the fate of women can be transformed.

Blind reservation is not what is required,
Stringent reservation is all that is desired.

The ill effects of this cannot also be disregarded,
With a thought of being deprived, boy-clan might be bombarded.
Reservation might also dilute the spirit of competition,
And might encourage callous tactics to access education.

The pros and cons outweigh each other
And that is the sole reason why we should bother.

And rightly so I conclude,
Reservation for EQUALITY and Not Reservation for SUPERIORITY
Can make the India’s future more mighty.
