Bizhawk, 2013 held on 5th and 6th March 2013 was the second installment of SGGSCC’s E Cell’s Fest. Bigger & Better than last time, the entrepreneurship fest spanned across 2 days and 6 events, namely Scamster, Ideamatic, Blue Chips, Escalada, Soch Incubation and Phoenix.

The fest began on 5th March, with a keynote speech by Mr. Arvind Kejriwal, a prominent social activist and founder of the Aam Admi Party. Mr. Kejriwal’s speech revolved around mobilizing the youth towards a corruption free India. The floor was open for questions from the audience, one of them being, and I rephrase, “Don’t you think that the Lokpal Bill is just another platform for people to find their way around to corrupt others... because corruption is caused by humans and not systems, for instance, taxation is also a very good system, but people have found ways to corrupt it, what are your thoughts?”, to which Mr. Kejriwal replied by citing another example, regarding the Shopping Malls and littering, “People’s mentality changes when the system is right. People don’t litter in shopping malls but they do litter as soon as they exit, so you just need to create the right type of system for people to live in and that’ll ensure they don’t corrupt it.”
The 1st day had many events, including Ideamatic, the Business Plan Competition, where participants didn’t just present a business plan, but also got an opportunity to be real life entrepreneurs and Escalada, the elevator pitch competition, where participants were given 2 minutes to present their idea for a new product, business or a service. Day 1 also saw Mega Case Study Competition– Phoenix, Soch Incubation, the platform for budding entrepreneurs and Make Your Own Product – Barter competition.

On the 2nd day, there were several formal events like Blue Chips, the Mockstock competition, where buyers invested and earned profit, vying to outdo all the other investors in the market and emerge the ultimate victor and Scamster, where a team of 5 members were given a situation and were judged on their spontaneity. Other informal events included Musical Tambola, Angry Entrepreneur and Football Bidding! The entire college was present at the common Beggars Point enjoying all the different events put together by the Cell.

This two day fest was innovative, fresh and memorable, and the organizers promised that the fest will indeed reach new heights in the coming years.

The quiet and usually calm college of Daulat Ram seemed bubbling with high spirits and euphoria. The fest kick-started with an enthusiastic marathon which was followed by an inauguration speech by India’s favorite Bahu -Smriti Irani aka Tulsi. The All India President of the Women's Wing (Bhartiya Janata Party Mahila Morcha) was undoubtedly inspiring in many ways for the large women audience that she was addressing to.

The college was adorned with beautiful carnations and the festival fervor could be witnessed from every nook and corner. On entering the college gates the slogans and shouts of the dramatics society of the college- memesis were clearly audible. The harsh sun was no deterrent to the energetic participants of Adakaari – the street play that took place on the college lawns.

Meanwhile the auditorium was packed to witness the most favored event of any college fest i.e. the western dance competition. The judges to the event were highly revered personalities one of them being a finalist in the highly popular dance show in India – Dance India Dance. The use of fancy props and sparkling costumes made it a mesmerizing affair.

The stalls were impressively ubiquitous as their presence could be felt almost everywhere. Colorful bangles, beadnecklaces, carefully crafted shawls and all sorts of beauty products could be seen piled up in most of the stalls for obvious reasons. Exclusive handmade footwear and handicraft remained the center of attraction among the students that were being offered at much reasonable prices.

Day 2 had many interesting events lined up , one of them being the food festivals wherein students tried their hands at cooking .Varied delicacies like pasta rizzoto, biriyani, hand- made chocolates were adding their share to the already  aromatic ambience.

The photography exhibition by the college society Eidos exhibited some beautiful shots on both the days of the fest. The last day of the fest had been reserved for some novel events namely “hogathon”, Paralympics, a screening of the movie –“water” based on social atrocities faced by women.

Hogathon was fun to watch as the participants had to hog on food and break the record of eating the maximum amount of food items within a prescribed time limit.

The passes for Taraana – an evening with Benny Dayal, were sold like hot cakes. The students were eager to watch benny perform live and create magic with his splendid baritone. The wait for him got over when the clock struck 7. He managed to invoke the soft sentiments of the overjoyed audience playing with his voice witheach twist and turn of the beats. The Malayalam singer reserved his recent hit –LAT LAG GAI for the last and sung almost every track that he is known for.

“Ek Khwaab Jo Maine Dekha Hai,
Khud Hi Mein Janma Hai...
Badlaav Ki Wo Soch Hai,
Khud Hi Mein Dekha Hai.”

-Manthan 2013.
Aao, Ek Khwaab Ko Janm Dein.

The world is a perfect amalgamation of innumerable imperfections. Some of those imperfections keep us striving together for that absolute perfection and thus, establishes a rationale of our existence. But others may try to harm that very existence. How many times has it been that we have seen such imperfections but have not really ‘looked’ at them? Perhaps, many times.  Manthan-2013 started its journey with this vision of making us not only look at these imperfections but also ponder upon them and enthused us to correct them.

Verve- the street play society of SSCBS annually organizes Manthan- the Street Play Festival of SSCBS and invites the performances of the street play societies of other colleges. This year, one could witness the advent of the season of change with winds of two initiatives of Manthan 2013 blowing in the schools and NGOs of Delhi. ‘The Street Plays To Schools Program’ was conducted from 6th February to 15th February in Bal Bharti Public School, Pitampura, Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, St. Mary’s School, Delhi Public School, Rohini, Shri Guru Nanak Public school, Adarsh Nagar ,Ahlcon International School and Mount Abu Public School. After this the ‘Street Plays to NGOs program’ was conducted from 18th-22nd February with a performance in shelter homes - ‘Bal Sahyog’ ,‘Arya Anathalaya’ ,’Blind Relief Association’,etc. Manthan also spread its wings to Chandigarh by various street play performances by Verve with few colleges of Chandigarh.

‘’Yeh Kehna hai kitna aasan

Ki Khaamiyan tujhmei hain

Par Aaine mei dekhke ek baat jaani

Badlav mujhmei hai”

With this motto, the Main event of Manthan began from 25th February with an opening ceremony in Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies. The season of change had spread over the entire capital as performances were conducted at Hauz Khas Village, Sector 12 Dwarka, Nehru Place Market, Dilli Haat INA, Preet Vihar Market, V3S Mall Nirman Vihar, Great India Palace Noida, Pacific Mall, Jantar Mantar, TDI Mall Rajouri Garden, PVR Saket, Green Park Market, Metro Walk Rithala, 3C’s Mall Lajpat Nagar, India Gate, Sarojini Nagar Market and Vishwavidyalaya Station.

Can a patient be cured if he refuses to accept that he has a disease?  No. So how can the entire society be transformed if they fail to accept the faults in them? The first step towards improvement is the acknowledgement of the need of it. In order to bring this realization to the masses, various colleges performed street plays on the issues that plague today’s society. Abhivyakti, the Dramatics Society of IP College questioned the contradiction of the Freedom of Expression with the Sedition Law. Ankur, the Dramatics Society of SGTB Khalsa College justified the reservation policies but pointed out the non performance of the responsibility of the State towards its proper implementation in their annual production ‘Reservation Leela’. Manchtantra Creations, Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce presented ‘Jaati Kabhi Na Jati’ condemning the evils of the prevailing caste system. Memesis, The Dramatics Society of Daulat Ram College, portrayed the right way of dealing with fear with their production ‘'Darte Kyu Ho Pappu Mia?’. The Dramatics Society of Lady Shri Ram College presented its production 'Do Dhaari Talwar' exploring the theme of censorship. The Dramatics Society of Shri Ram College of Commerce performed its production 'Daud' presenting the ill effects of a ‘competitive’ society. Kahkasha- Hindi Dramatics Society, Jesus and Mary College presented the egoistic and self centered society of today with its production for this year 'Main Main Karti Bakri'. Rudra, PGDAV Dramsoc promoted the importance of sex education through'' YE GANDI BAAT HAI''.  Ibtida, the Dramatics Society of Hindu College protested for the power to protest through its production “Mudda kya hai?Maksad kya hai?” Hansraj Dramatics Society's street play production “Naadaan” attempted to find the lost innocence in us. Kshitij,The Shahifakeer, the Dramatics society of Gargi College, in their production 'Jungle Ka Raja Kaun?'  brought forward the state of animals in our country . JUNOON-The Dramatics society, Dyal Singh College (Eve), reflected upon the state of prisons of today through their production 'Yeh Kaisi Saza?'. Anukriti - The Hindi Dramatics Society of Miranda House discovered the issues in the Indian Medical Field through their production ‘Der bhi, Andher bhi’. Lakshya - The Theatre Society of Kamala Nehru College presented ‘Thheher’ focusing on the consequences of the fast pace of the society of today.

The annual cultural fest of SRCC – Crossroads ’13 began with a spark and ended in a blast. Yes! It was bigger and better than any of its previous versions. The 4 day extravaganza began on the 27th of February. Each day brought with itself new excitement, new joy, new fun, new adventures and new experiences. The feel was contagious and no one could escape the frenzy it created.

The entire fun was spread over four amazing days. On the first day 27th of March was “Woodstock”, where the duo-performer Salim – Sulaiman were the guest star performers for the day. The crowd was enthralled by the amazing song performances. To add to the flavor was Shraddha, who performed along with them. The defining performance of the day was Salim singing “Qurbaan hua” from his album “Qurbaan”. That sent everyone into trance making everybody’s eve worth coming to the CrossRoads.

The second day was the “Random Collisions” or to call it better “The Sunburn”. Yes, you heard it right!! If you are looking for The Sunburn, then you don’t need to go to Goa, SRCC is the place to hang out. A night of extra-ordinary beats and grooves along with electro music was witnessed at SRCC. The DJs having once played with Swedish Mafia House turned their magic on at SRCC.

The third day was the most awaited event – The Fashion Show. And to add to the excitement of the show, it was the ‘Student of the Year’ actor,VarunDhawan himself as the show-stopper. With the glamour of the Fashion show topped with Varun Dhawan as the show stopper, it became difficult to control one-self and that was seen quite apparently when many people climbed up to the stage to dance with him and get their pictures clicked along with him. And yes, he didn’t let the excitement die by assenting to all the wishes of the audience, be it getting a picture clicked or grooving on the beats of “Disco Deewane”.

The stage was all set for the last day of CrossRoads – “Encore” which was the grandest day with Sonu Nigam performing at the college. Everything was going all fine until the news about the unfortunate demise of Sonu Nigam’s mother came. The ecstasy was all gone!!! Alas, there could exist no force greater than the Power of God. But it was really commendable of the Students Union, SRCC to have yet another scintillating performer Sunidhi Chauhan in place of Sonu Nigam. Everyone enjoyed to their fullest on the last night of the CrossRoads. Sunidhi Chauhan was rocking on the stage with her songs making everyone swirl and twirl. It was a fantastic ending to a complimentarily brilliant beginning.

The arrangements were excellent with good management of the crowd at all the events. The entry to the college was strictly restricted to the college students and those carrying special invites as issued by the Students’ Union SRCC. The Mathematics and Computers Society had their fest – “3rd Degree” going on during the same days. The days were all packed up with the event here and there organized by various societies and clubs of the college including – MathCom, NSS, the Travelers’ Society and the Sustainability Development Cell. The Food Partners were amazingly garnered by them leaving no name one could think of not present at the SRCC. Be it the Tandoori Momos of QD’s or the Sugarcane Juice corner, the stalls were milling with people coming and having the best ties of their lives.

These were the moments of life to cherish, not easy to forget especially for the SR’ites. Those endless moments with friends, those days just flew by and it’s really going to be difficult for all of us to get back to our daily routines. As several status go after the end of CrossRoads “Chaar din ki chandni fir andhrei raat…”!!!

Amongst the season of fests and competitions, among the panic-attacks and frenzy that the organizers go through this time of the year, one tends to overlook some stand-out events. One such event is ‘Tasveer’, a photography competition organized by Clicks, The Photography Society of Delhi College of Arts & Commerce (DCAC).

A part of the Annual Fest of DCAC, the competition has been known for its unique photo-stalls and quality pictures every year. This year too, the society has something out-of –the box concept planned and they sure-as-hell don’t want to reveal the surprise! Vaibhav, the President of Clicks, says that the Photo-Exhibition will have contemporary-meets-traditional vibe to it. He says that a lot of brain-storming and effort has gone in creating the whole display. But, sticking to his word, he doesn’t let a single detail slip. So watch out!

The competition has both, on-the-spot and online, version. For The online competition, themed: ‘From a Family Album’ participants can mail in the entries by 5th March to ([email protected]). For more details, such as the Rules & Regulations, visit the link: (http://www.facebook.com/AadyaPhotographyCompetition).

For the on-the-spot-competition, however, the theme will be given of-course, on-the-spot. The winners from both the categories will be announced after the exhibition on 7th March, 2013.

Renowned Photographer Prashant Panjiar has been appointed as the Judge for both the competitions. As one of India’s senior photojournalists and picture editors, Panjiar is actively involved in guiding young photographers. He is one of the three senior photographers who select and mentor young documentary photographers for National Foundation of India’s fellowship programme. Panjiar served on the jury of the World Press Photo Awards in Amsterdam in 2002 and the first annual China International Press Photo Competition organized by Xinhua, the national news agency of China. So the bar has been set pretty high! You can have a look at his amazing work at http://www.panjiarphoto.com/.

Your creativity will not go unrewarded as prizes worth Rs. 5000 are up for grabs. So it doesn’t matter if you carry a DSLR or a phone-camera, all that matters is your vision and your expression. Do not let this opportunity pass by, and learn, comment, discuss, critique and debate as the medium as much as you can.

Join in the event and be a part of something unforgettable.
