Maths might be boring for most of us,but some people can make even maths fun and this is precisely what the Mathematics department of Miranda Housedid with their annual department fest- Origin’13.The hard work put in by the organizing committee could be clearly seen on the day of the fest which was filled with lots of fun and engaging events.


It was a one day fest which was held on the 20th of March and commenced with an inaugural talk.Dr Geetha Venkatraman delivered a speech on ‘Cryptology’ which was attended by a number of students.Dr Geetha’s speechwas extremely informative and a great learning experience for those who attended it. A number of games were also organised by the maths department such as ad mad, shuffle the glass, lucky 7, etc. An investor awareness programme on financial literacy was organized for the students by the Bombay stock exchange which was an excellent opportunity for the students to enhance their knowledge on investment. The Mat lab event (paper presentation) was another event which challenged the students to prove their mettle in the field of mathematics. Papers were presented by a number of students on various topics such as Millennium problems, Monty Carloproblem, Paradoxes and Mathematical biology among others.This was followed by three fun events -The Scavenger hunt, Logical quiz and Pictionary.

 ‘Avenger and the rise of numbers’- The scavenger hunt was the most interesting and theawaited event. Participants could participate in pairs and they were given fabulous team names such as Hulk, Thor, Spiderwoman, Black widow and so on. Basic knowledge in maths was all that was needed to win the event. The logical quiz was the other fun event which gathered a lot of participation. The quiz had two rounds; the first round was a preliminary round while the second round was an interesting out of the boxquizzing round. As far as Pictionary is concerned, it was an event full of fun, giggles and math-ness. Prizes of worth Rs. 20,000 were given to the winners in both cash and kind.

Origin 2013 was a huge success owing to its excellent organizing committee and brilliant participation. The fest ended on a positive note and good memories and people already have high hopes set for the next year.
